Why You Should Dive with Certified Instructors at a Certified Dive Center

By Submarine Diving Center · 7 November 2026

Scuba diving is a safe and deeply rewarding activity when it is done properly. The word that matters is properly. Whether you are trying a Discover Scuba Diving experience on holiday or starting a full course, who teaches you and where you dive makes a real difference to how safe, comfortable and enjoyable it is.

What “certified” actually means

A certified instructor has completed an internationally recognised instructor development programme, passed assessments in teaching and in-water skills, and keeps a current teaching status with their training agency. A certified dive center is a business that has agreed to follow that agency’s training standards and quality requirements. At Submarine Diving Center, we are a PADI 5 Star Dive Resort and have been teaching in Sri Lanka since 1991.

Seven reasons it matters

1. Training that follows a proven standard

Certified courses follow a set structure: knowledge, confined-water skills and open-water dives, each with clear performance requirements. You are not just taken for a swim. You are taught how to breathe, equalise, control your buoyancy, and what to do if something goes wrong.

2. Instructors trained to teach, not just to dive

Being a good diver and being a good teacher are different skills. Certified instructors are trained to spot nervous students, adapt to different learning speeds and stay calm in a mistake or a problem.

3. Safe group sizes and supervision

Standards set limits on how many students one instructor can supervise, and those limits depend on the activity and conditions. For example, our Discover Scuba Diving Standard experience is 2 divers to 1 instructor, and 1:1 can be arranged on request, subject to availability.

4. Equipment that is checked and maintained

Regulators, BCDs, tanks and cylinders should be inspected and serviced on a schedule, and cylinders filled with clean, tested air. A professional centre checks your gear before every dive, so you never discover a problem at depth.

5. A proper briefing, every time

Before you get in the water you should receive a clear briefing on the site, depth, hand signals, how to stay together and what to do in an emergency. A good briefing leaves time for your questions.

6. An emergency plan

Professional operators keep emergency oxygen and first-aid equipment on hand, have staff trained in first aid and rescue, and know the nearest medical facilities. You will probably never need any of it. It is there so that if you do, nobody has to improvise.

7. Honest medical screening

Responsible centres ask you to complete a medical questionnaire and will not dive anyone who needs a doctor’s clearance until they have it. This can feel like a hassle, but it protects you. Please always answer truthfully.

How to check before you book

  • Ask for the instructor’s certification level and agency. A good centre will be happy to tell you.
  • Look for the centre’s affiliation with a recognised training agency, and check it on the agency’s own website where possible.
  • Ask about group size, how many divers per instructor and per boat.
  • Ask about emergency oxygen and first aid on board and on site.
  • Ask how the equipment is maintained and whether you will use your own set or shared gear.
  • Read recent reviews from other divers, particularly beginners.
  • Be wary of unusually low prices that leave out the instructor, equipment or insurance, or of anyone who skips the briefing or the medical questions.
  • Check insurance. Ask what cover the centre has, and consider dive travel insurance of your own.
